Assistive Listening Devices

For those with challenges that go beyond hearing aids, we offer a wide range of products, including systems that assist listening, enhance hearing and functioning over the telephone and television, alerting devices for emergencies, TTYs and closed captioned decoders.

Assistive listening devices (ALDs) improve communication and offer greater independence. ALDs offer improvement in three basic areas:

  • Direct communication with other people as well as enjoyment of TV, radio, and stereo.
  • Assistance with over-the-telephone communication.
  • Better awareness of environmental sounds and situations.

Woman on phone.Listening Devices:

These devices are designed to enhance listening in social, interpersonal, spiritual, cultural, and recreational situations. These devices can be hardwired, infrared, FM, or loop systems. A hardwired remote microphone attached to a hearing aid preserves loudness and sound quality. Like a pair of binoculars for the ears, you are grabbing the desired sound and directing it to your ear minus the effects of distance, background noise or poor room acoustics. You connect ALDs to sound sources such as the TV, radio, tape deck or others with a phone/jack connection. With FM and infrared technology, the receiver is connected to earphones or directly to your hearing aid if equipped with a telecoil or direct audio input circuit. FM, infrared and loop devices are used in places open to the public such as theaters, cinemas, meeting halls, courtrooms, etc.

Alarm Devices:

These devices alert a person anywhere in the home to a doorbell, phone, fire alarm, burglar alarm, baby crying, or an oven timer. These sensory devices include wake up and warning equipment that provide tactile or visual signals that can vibrate a wrist receiver or flash a light when a knock at the door occurs, a telephone rings, or doorbells chime. With severe hearing loss, closed caption TV and the teletypewriter or (TTY) open exciting lines of communication.
