“For so many years, I wouldn’t take part in conversations because of my hearing loss. I would actually exclude myself from situations where I knew I wasn’t going to be able to understand what people were saying. These hearing aids have changed my life tremendously.”
Lisa Kallsen re-connects to life with hearing aids
Lisa Kallsen has struggled with a hearing loss since her early teens. “I remember having a hearing test at school in the seventh grade,” Lisa recalls. “It showed I had a hearing loss, but I coped with it by sitting in the front of the class and learning to read lips.”
By the time Lisa was in her 20s and working, she realized she needed a professional hearing evaluation, but thought perhaps her problem could be corrected with surgery. “The doctor said surgery wasn’t an option for me and that I needed hearing aids. I just wasn’t ready to do anything about my hearing loss at that point. I was worried about having something in my ear. I was uncomfortable with that, so I just chose to ignore it.”
As the years went by, Lisa’s hearing loss became more pronounced, but her husband and children helped her through difficult listening situations, often translating conversations for her. Finally, Lisa’s husband, Jeff Kallsen, M.D., a physician on staff at Saint Luke’s South Hospital, encouraged her to schedule an appointment with Associated Audiologists.
“I was very comfortable throughout the evaluation process,” she says. “That is important because you are establishing a relationship with the audiologist.” After a complete hearing evaluation, her audiologist recommended two state-of-the-art digital, open-fit hearing aids. “The first thing I noticed was that I could hear construction sounds down the street, dogs barking, and sirens,” Lisa says. “I hadn’t heard those things in years.”
Today, the mother of two enjoys the new-found confidence her hearing aids have given her. “For so many years, I wouldn’t take part in conversations. I would actually exclude myself from situations where I knew I wasn’t going to be able to understand what people were saying,” Lisa says. “These hearing aids have changed my life tremendously.”
