More than 1 million people in the U.S. are living with Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s is a movement disorder that can cause tremors, slower movement, stiffness and balance problems. Other common non-movement symptoms include depression or anxiety, memory problems and constipation.
Although each person’s experience with Parkinson’s is unique, researchers are discovering patterns that are common throughout many people’s journeys with the disorder. One such connection is the link between Parkinson’s disease and hearing loss, especially in older adults.
Hearing loss may increase Parkinson’s risk
A recent study published in JAMA Neurology examined the health records of more than 7 million veterans. Researchers set out to tackle the question, “Is hearing loss associated with an increased risk of a diagnosis of incident Parkinson disease (PD) in US veterans?”
The findings showed an increased association between hearing loss and development of Parkinson’s, even after accounting for other related factors. However, they also discovered that early evaluation and treatment of hearing loss with hearing aids reduced the risk.
“We still have much to learn about how hearing loss contributes to the disease and how hearing aids might work to lower one’s risk for getting PD,” said the research study’s lead author, Lee Neilson, MD, a staff neurologist for the Portland VA and assistant professor of neurology in the Oregon Health and Science University School of Medicine. “Considering there are few downsides to getting screened and fitted for a hearing aid, we would encourage everyone to do it.”

How an audiologist can help with hearing, balance and tinnitus
If you or a loved one already has a diagnosis of (or risk factors for) Parkinson’s disease, here are some ways your audiologist can help.
Provide a personalized evaluation
Your audiologist will talk with you about the specific concerns you have related to your hearing, balance and auditory processing and comprehension. By getting a clearer picture of how these issues are affecting your day-to-day life, your audiologist can recommend the best course of treatment for you.
Create a plan of action
Whether it’s hearing aids, tinnitus management or other interventions, your audiologist will collaborate with you and your other clinicians on how to best manage your hearing-related issues.
Keep in touch with regular visits
In addition to a comprehensive hearing evaluation, your audiologist can help with:
- Selecting and fitting hearing aids.
- Earwax removal.
- Hearing aid maintenance and repair.
- Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) management.
- Balance and dizziness issues.
- Ongoing monitoring of hearing loss.
